Clays

Raw Works

My fascination with shaping clay began in the Great Indian Desert.

I helped mold the roof of a new calf house alongside an auntie from the village where I was staying, just outside of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. I love the feeling of earth between my fingers. It’s that reminder of the connection between art, community, and the natural world that inspires what I create.

*Photos of organic, 7-inch tall creations made while house-sitting in the farmlands of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, each shaped and textured by hand using a pencil and hairpin, 2021.

This is my nomadic art studio, where clay morphs into things that are unexpected and magical and fleeting. Since carrying around blocks of clay makes little sense for my lifestyle, each sculpt has returned to the earth by now, so these select images are all that’s left of their short visits.

(Except for the piece in the bottom left corner. It’s found a home at Espacio Mutante, an artist collective in Guanajuato, Mexico.)
